How to Make a Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino
While a Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino is delicious and refreshing, it's
also very expensive. Now you can save yourself the trouble of going to
Starbucks and make a mock version of it at home with basic ingredients
you can buy at the grocery store. This recipe will produce a delectable
drink that tastes like the real thing.
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup very strongly brewed coffee
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/3 cup whole milk
- 1 cup ice cubes
- 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup
- Whipped cream and extra chocolate syrup, for garnish
Steps
-
1Brew the coffee. You only need 1/3 cup of coffee, but it's important to make sure it is very strongly brewed to get that classic mocha taste. Brew dark roast coffee, and add an extra teaspoon or so of ground coffee beans to ensure the coffee will be dark enough.
- Alternatively, you can use two shots of espresso in place of the coffee. This will result in a rich, highly caffeinated drink.[1]
- Or if you're watching your caffeine intake, use decaffeinated coffee. You can also use chicory for a decaf option.
-
2Mix the coffee with sugar while it's still warm. Mixing the tablespoon of sugar into the warm coffee will cause it to dissolve, resulting in a smoother and more palatable final texture. Stir the sugar into the hot coffee until you no longer see granules of sugar.
-
3Mix in the milk. Add 1/3 cup of cold milk to the coffee and sugar mixture. Milk results in a rich, delicious drink, but you could use 1 percent or skim if you'd prefer. If you're feeling adventurous, try half and half.
- For a dairy-free alternative, try using coconut milk. The drink will have a slightly tropical, delicious twist.
- Or use almond milk or cashew milk. Nut milks have a mild flavor that plays well against the rich coffee and chocolate.
-
4Mix in the chocolate syrup. Adding 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup results in a flavor that tastes very similar to the classic Starbucks Mocha Frappucino. If you're a chocolate lover, feel free to add an extra tablespoon.[2]
-
5Chill the mixture. Place the coffee, sugar and milk mixture in the refrigerator to chill it until you're ready to use it. Once the mixture is cold, it's ready to use. You can store it for up to five days before using if you prefer.
-
6Add the ice to your blender. Some blenders have trouble with large ice cubes, so you may want to add chipped ice instead of whole cubes. Either way, place a cup of ice cubes in the blender.
-
7Pour in the drink mixture. Take the chilled mixture from the refrigerator and pour it over the ice cubes.
-
8Blend the ingredients until smooth. You may need to blend the mixture in several pulses to achieve the smooth texture of a Starbucks Mocha Frappucino. Keep blending until you get the texture you want.[3]
-
9Serve the drink. Pour the drink into a tall glass. Top it with whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup. Add a straw, then enjoy your customized drink.
Tips
- Make it your own. Add things like caramel flavouring to spruce it up.
- Try adding a bit of spice if you feel like it. Cinnamon is nice, or maybe a dash of nutmeg.
- Double, triple or quadruple the recipe to share some with friends.
Warnings
- This is not the proprietary recipe of Starbucks. This is a copycat recipe designed to build a replica of the real product.
